About Us

Our Mission

We empower youth, especially from new immigrant communities, through meaningful outdoor experiences that educate about the world’s environmental challenges. Today’s youth hold the potential to change the world for the better. By preaching the importance of sustainability and environmental-friendly practices, we can create a greener future.

Why The Name “Ecohorizons”?

We use this name because it combines the prefix “eco”, which means anything
environmentally related, with horizon. Horizon is a concept we associate with looking
out into the future for a better society and better opportunities. When we seek the
“horizon” during a beautiful sunset on a beach, we aspire to become a better version of
ourselves in the future. Our non-profit embraces both “eco” and “horizon” because we
care about inclusivity and providing opportunities to all communities while also
teaching youth the importance of sustainability. Diversity/equity and climate action are both goals we aspire for in an ideal world.

Founder’s Message

As the Earth continues to warm and humans continue to exploit our natural resources, our environments are suffering and quickly disappearing. Therefore, it is more important than ever to prepare the next generation to become environmentally conscious.

In recent years, I’ve devoted a substantial portion of my time to engaging with new immigrant communities in Maryland. Whether it’s through participating in club volleyball, providing volleyball lessons, volunteering to raise awareness about COVID vaccines, or assisting my father with community chores, I’ve had the privilege of immersing myself in the rich culture and way of life of the Hispanic community. Yet, during this immersion, I’ve also noticed a significant gap in access to quality education, particularly when it comes to environmental awareness. Facing language, cultural, and financial barriers, new immigrants are unfortunately often left out of sustainability efforts.

EcoHorizons reaches out to underrepresented youth across Maryland and beyond, educating about nature conservation, pollution, and climate change through free, handson experiences. From composting and recycling demonstrations in local neighborhoods to AdoptARoad initiatives, our organization instills sustainable practices in the youth and families we impact. By arming the young generation with the tools and knowledge needed to fight the environmental crisis, we create hope for a greener, more equitable future.

Many of these new immigrant families are concentrated in under-funded school districts and facing with daily language barriers. They endured numerous challenges and lack the privilege to, for example, take vacations and explore the wonders of nature. As I combined my passion for the environment with my desire to empower these communities, I conceived a new initiative
