Yellowstone Edition #1: The Effects of Grazing on Vegetation with Sophia Richter

In this podcast, I discuss with Sophia Richter, a lab-tech student at Cornell University, on her research regarding the ecology of Yellowstone. Sophia studied the effects that grazing animals (bison, elk) had on the health of the plant communities in the park, noting how the overpopulation of bison has decreased plant biodiversity and encouraged the expansion of non-native species. Ultimately, we learn how climate change and human influence are causing conservation challenges in our national parks.

Turtle in the Pool (for Kids)

In this podcast, I will let my younger brother Andrew talk about a giant snapping turtle that somehow ended up in our backyard swimming pool this spring.

As in previous years, during the month of May the pool water remained a lively green that was so thick, that the warm afternoon sunshine could not penetrate. It was during one of those warm afternoons when I returned from school, Andrew ran to me with excitement in his voice "there is a giant turtle in the pool"! Huh? This is news. I will let Andrew tell his story in his own animated way, then.

The DC Environmental Film Festival: How Can We Infuse Hope into Climate Action?

The Case of the Brown's Motel: How Nearby Infrastructure Harms Patapsco State Park

In this podcast, I talk about my engagement with a controversial case to build a large apartment building meters away from the boundary of Patapsco State Park, a conserved forest near Ellicott City in central Maryland. The park is bordered by a historic one-story inn called the Brown's motel, and a commercial company has recently clashed with the county government to replace it with a larger apartment building. Although beneficial to senior residents, this infrastructure is clearly harmful to the surrounding environment, as it can create problems such as stormwater management. As an environmental activist, I talk about my experience witnessing the Board of Appeals hearing and giving an in-person testimonial in opposition.
